Can I open-up for anyone out there?

Yo, I am a S.F. native who grew-up in the Mission/Excelsior back in the 80's. And although I had a lot of local friends (back then), I've found it VERY difficult nowadays to get any kind of opportunity to gig as a DJ in my hometown. Probably 'cuz I've lived in NYC since after High School.

There seems to be a monopoly goin' on out there . . .
it seems like a handful of DJ crews have sh_t "on lock". I've come home for annual visits & attend as many parties as possible.
I know I can rock a party as well as some of my teenage peers (i.e. Triple Threat), but 'how' do I get the opportunity?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated ;-)

San Francisco stalwart, (by way of NYC) Ren The Vinyl Archaeologist, has been holding it down for SF hip-hop culture since 2000. A great proponent of the four elements of hip hop, Ren in conjunction with his magazine/newsletter Trueskool, promotes events related to b-boying, emceeing, dj'ing, and the written word graffiti. Ren's persistence and dedication has earned him spots alongside greats such as: Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Q-Bert, KRS-One, and Cut Chemist.

In terms of abilites, they don't call him The Vinyl Archaeologist for nothing! Ren is notorious for digging deep in the crates for uncanny surprises. Expect to hear some 90's dance tunes in the vein of: C+C, Technotronic, as well as some 80's heat such as: New Order, Man Parrish, Newcleus, Information Society, Rob Base + EZ Rock all mixed with his inimitable hip-hop flair.

Something very different…The KARAS AMV by the Opposite of Faith featuring DJ Quest

What you are about to see is an evolution in film sound design far different from anything you‘ve heard before…

The Karas AMV

Anime Music Videos (AMV) are created by hobbyist who take a popular song and add it on top of existing Japanese Animation footage to give the Video a new and more exciting feel. The Karas AMV was created around the idea of taking found sources and samples from existing Japanese Animation titles and combining it with performances highly skilled musicians and Turntablist to recreate the film sound effect work creating a frenetic, hyper real approach to sound design. After the original sound track was removed, the music (Bass performance and Ableton sounds by J of The Opposite of Faith) was written and recorded into Ableton Live- every other voice, movement, moment and mood was created on Turntables and through Turntable mixing techniques (cutting, scratching, transforming) while performing to the video. The approach was expanded by having the Turntablist (DJ Quest and DJ Cplus) manipulating the Dave Smith Evolver and the Korg Kaoss Pad through the DJ mixers and MIDI control. Performances (Bass, Turntables) were record through the EMU 1616 into Ableton Live and warped, edited and combined there. The final mixdown was performed in Ableton Live and Mastered using Summit Audio Tube EQs.

This is the first in series of creative Music/Video/Art Projects by the Opposite of Faith-creativity without compromise…

Maricel Elacio Cadabes aka Celskiii hails from the city of Vallejo and has been DJing since 1997, but has been a Hiphoppa since she was a snot-nosed kid. Although she started off by learning how to mix on some generic-ass bd-10s, she got even more inspired after witnessing the Invisbl Skratch Piklz, growing hungry to learn more about skratch music and how to do it. This woman loves skratching!

Celskiii has been on a journey since those late 90 years of being exposed to Deco's Beat Lounge, working with Sisterz of the Underground, organizing Skratchpad with her homies, teaching DJ classes and workshops to youths, going on tour with KRS-ONE, performing in the Four Masters Tour (alongside Q-Bert, DJ Flare, Grandwizard Theodore, & DJ Jazzy Jeff), and still making music and playing music for all kinds of crowds. Celskiii's got upcoming projects set-up with her partner-in-crime (& music), Deeandroid, so look out!

She's inspired by many artists and DJs she's fortunate to be surrounded by including her sexy husband, Jus Jones. She's also inspired to make shit happen by the living example of her hard-working parents. She's beginning a new chapter in her life as a wifey and mama but she'll continue to make the music and play for the people. Besides DJing, she loves dancing, sarcastic commentary, and prenatal yoga.

Upsetting battle DJs throughout the world for the supreme title of 1997 and 1998 ITF World Champion, New Jersey raised Vinroc remains rooted in his strong family values and passion for music. He has not forgotten his love of hip-hop and the art form known to mainstream society as "DJing" or turntablism to an eclectic few. DJ Vinroc is 21-year-old Vincent Punsalan from New Jersey, a proud member of the DJ battle crew known as 5th Platoon. Vinroc first began DJing in 1987 at the early age of ten. He began moving on to local battles in New York where he was first introduced to his future crew as well as other battle DJ's such as the X-ecutioners (Loud Records). Vinroc has been featured and seen worldwide in magazines such as Rolling Stone, The Source, Rap Pages, URB, Subculture Magazine, XXL, The San Francisco Weekly and numerous publications throughout the world. Touring and projects have taken him throughout the United States and overseas to such cultural enclaves as New York, Los Angeles, Texas, San Francisco, Canada, London, and Amsterdam. Besides worldwide attention in the media and music industry, another drastic change in his young life was his relocation from the East Coast to the West Coast. Vinroc has worked on projects that include cuts for Source Magazine's top 5 indie album artist Rasco, Peanut Butter Wolf, Eclipse 427, Fanatik, Planet Asia, as well as fellow turntablist Q-Berts' full length feature release Wave Twister. In the latter he beat juggles with Beastie Boys' DJ Mixmaster Mike. Moreover, Vinroc has performed alongside the likes of the Beat Junkies, Invisbl Skratch Piklz, X-ecutioners, the Arsonists, Biz Markie, Pete Rock, Cut Master Swift, Jurrassic 5, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Hurricane, Jamalski, Jungle Brothers, Company Flow and the list goes on. Inspired earlier by mixes he heard on 'Fresh Tracks' on KFOX in the mid 80's and mixes that young b-boys would pass around, Spinja turned from a avid mixtape collector and making pause mixes on his dual cassette deck to djing on home turntables and a radio shack mixer in 1989. In 1992 he upgraded to 1200's and started rockin' house Parties and College Dances all over Seattle area. Playing anything from old school freestyle to the freshest RnB/Hip Hop cuts, Spinja always been known for setting a vibe at the party that sets him apart from the rest. In 1999 he retired to focus on his family and career, however, he couldn't stay away too long and returned in 2003 to DJ the Old School-themed 'Sinagang' Parties in Seattle. Reclaiming the Streets....

ok, this is a shout out to you DJs out there. not sure if you know what Reclaim the Streets is, but heres the deal.

1) were having a street party this Saturday (noon starting at dolores park). its been well promoted, its unauthorized (illegal but we got your lawyer covered), its public, its open, its daytime, and its free. you should come chek it out, whether you play or not. 411 at www.reclaimsf.org.

now, we cant pay you anything if you wanna play.and if you do wanna perform you gotta know this is lo tek street shit, you dont have to be booked, and you might even be sharing time with DJs who spin all sorts of shit, possibly shit you dont even like, and youll be jacking into a mobile sound system with a 1/4" or 1/8" connection. you gota handle your own shit, and its gotta be mobile - think what you can carry in a backpack - a mix CD, an IPOD, laptop.

2) yeah anyway its not likely any of you can swing it this time around. and we know thats a lot of requirements. and that this is coming out of the blue at you. but some of us that have been organizing these parties want to branch out in terms of DJs and start making some connections with folks like you, get you out in the street, get your peoples out in the street with us, change up the flavor of these street parties so they got a little more appeal to many different types of folks. if you dont hook up with us this time, keep us in mind, keep an eye out for reclaim the streets, and well try to do a better job next time of reaching out to djs like you.

Bio: DJ FUZE
DJ FUZE (aka DonJon) busted onto the international Hip Hop scene in 1989 as the DJ and co-producer of the infamous, legendary, and funked up Digital Underground. After producing several Gold and Platinum tracks with DU, and the now iconic Tupac Shakur (R.I.P.), including “Doowutchyalike,” "Freaks Of The Industry," and "I Get Around", FUZE began work with The Luniz in 1994, on their multi platinum debut album, "Operation Stackola". FUZE also joined the Luniz, as their DJ, on a two-year world tour, supporting the international smash hit, and number 1 all time bay area anthem, "I Got Five On It." FUZE has performed at countless venues, such as The Apollo Theatre in New York City, Wembley Stadium in London, and The L.A Coluseum, with the likes of Biggie Smalls, Public Enemy, N.W.A., Queen Latifah, L.L. Cool J, Mary J. Blidge, Jodeci, Jimmy Cliff, and the list goes on. In 1994 FUZE made a conscious effort to return to the side of DJing he loves best, which is rocking clubs, and has worked steadily since then, doing just that, in the Bay Area, and beyond.
